WE WERE AT a Winston Cup track in the 1990s and Kyle Petty was being interviewed in the media center. Someone asked a question, and Kyle started talking gobbledygook.
And this had nothing to do with auto racing.
So and so was seeing someone he shouldn't be seeing, and his mother was going into surgery. And someone else was having money problems.
I turned to another reporter and asked, "WHAT the HECK is he talking about?"
"General Hospital," he said. Or maybe it was "the Young and Restless." I had known that Kyle was a big fan of The Andy Griffith Show, but I didn't know he was into soap operas, too.
