MY NEMESIS IN DAYTONA

THIS DRIVER MAY NOT HAVE BEEN ALIVE WHEN THIS HAPPENED

I don't know the exact year
(or years), but it was in the 1990s when I met my nemesis in Daytona.

I wanted to turn right into the main entrance. One guy pointed out the parking sticker on my vehicle, but the other guy very obviously shook his head "no." I had to drive around the huge track looking for a kindlier entrance. Eventually, I found it.

Another time, I was walking toward the Benny Kahn Media Room in the infield, and the same guy was waiting to stop me. I was still a good distance from the media room because there was a path down that way. Since he wouldn't let me in there, I had to hike down the road a bit, turn in to the Winston Cup garage and walk through the garage to the media room.

A third day, I drove to pressbox parking, but they wouldn't let me in. I had to park about a quarter-mile away in paddock parking and hoof it back to the pressbox. I told the track PR guy about it. It didn't bother me that I had to walk that distance; it bothered me that a friend who struggled to walk had to do it. I had watched him.

I don't know if my old nemesis was behind the paddock incident, but it's possible.

Otherwise, I have wonderful memories of Daytona and other Cup tracks.
