GETTING IN A WRECK

THIS PHOTO MAY HAVE BEEN TAKEN AT ROCKINGHAM

In the 1990s,
we were at North Carolina Motor Speedway in Rockingham, and I was working on a Winston Cup Scene story. I don't remember the subject, but I wanted to talk to Richard Petty.

Richard had just gotten out of the 43 car, and I asked The King if I could talk to him. He said he had to go to the bathroom, but he'd talk.

When he came back, I sat on something, and Richard climbed up on a stack of tires. He slid his butt down into the top tire, made himself comfortable and waited.

The one thing I remember from our conversation was I asked him about avoiding wrecks. He said that a young driver actually had a better chance with wrecks. He'd just pick a hole and head for it. He'd have maybe a 50-50 shot at avoiding a wreck.

Richard said that a veteran driver -- he'd run more than 1,000 Cup races at that point -- would fall back on experience. By the time he'd think it over, he'd be among the wrecked cars and probably be sitting in one of them.

Dale's little-boy look

MY FIRST ENCOUNTER
with Dale Earnhardt was uncomfortable. I was then working on a story for Winston Cup Scene, and Dale was standing on the back of a hauler an hour or so before Winston Cup qualifying.

I walked right up and asked Dale about his dreams as a driver. I was green and didn't know that no driver (much less Earnhardt) would talk before qualifying. Earnhardt said he couldn't think about it right then, and he learned up against the hauler and turned his head away.

He looked back at me and realized I was shocked, so he reached down, put his hand on my shoulder and said we'd talk about it some other time.

Dale didn't qualify that day at North Carolina Motor Speedway (Rockingham), so he and several other drivers had to requalify the next day (probably Friday). Earnhardt put up a good time, and he went into the media center to see how everyone else was doing.

He saw me and had this little-boy look, like he'd been caught at something. But we didn't say anything to each other.

It turns out he topped requalifying that day, with Mark Martin second. I believe Dale won a small bet with Mark.

I didn't get to talk to Earnhardt that weekend; that came the next year at Talladega, and that's a whole different story.

A laugh with Dick Beaty

We were at North Carolina Motor Speedway (Rockingham) in the early 1990s, and Winston Cup director Dick Beaty was laughing his head off.

There was a line of cars going through tech, and Beaty was looking at a car owned by a part-time driver; it could have been James Hylton or Delma Cowart or some other part-timer.

I asked Beaty why he was laughing, and he said that car had a Chevrolet engine, but the hood was Ford, and the back end of the car looked like an Oldsmobile. There was another part, maybe the roof, that was Pontiac.

"I don't know which template to put on it," he said, shaking his head.

I don't know if Beaty used a template for Ford or some other car make, but he passed the car. And it went out early in the race for "handling."
