REMEMBERING DALE EARNHARDT SR.

REMEMBERING DALE EARNHARDT SR.

Dale Earnhardt died Feb. 18, 2001, and it's strange to think that the 20-year anniversary is less than three weeks away. I've written a lot about Dale (I'll put links to some of them here), and I've been looking for Earnhardt videos on YouTube.

I think about him now and then, and it's still hard to think that he's gone.

The relevance of 218

I should have immediately realized the relevance of Feb. 18, but I didn't. Until I looked at Facebook.

There, I was reminded that Dale Earnhardt Sr. died on Feb. 18, 2001. Earnhardt was important to me, since he appeared on the cover of three books I wrote, and his car was on the cover of a book I co-wrote.

I have a quick story about Feb. 18. A friend of mine, Ron Glancy, said that he'd signed up for an Earnhardt poster that year, and he got it after Dale's death. His poster was No. 218 in the issue, and Ron wondered about the significance of 218.

Then he realized that Dale died on Feb. 18, also written as 2/18.

Not a huge deal, but interesting. That story, by the way, is in my book Angel in Black: Remembering Dale Earnhardt Sr.

I have watched just two full NASCAR races (both Daytona 500s) since Earnhardt died. It's not so interesting anymore.

Finding my books online

I was just looking for my writing online, and I found a Thriftbooks page of my books.

I wish they had listed them in order: first, the Racing Families coffeetable book; I Remember Dale Earnhardt, Angel in Black: Remembering Dale Earnhardt Sr.; and, finally, Then Junior Said to Jeff...

I found a page on the coffeetable book: Racing Families: A Tribute to Racing's Fastest Dynasties.

Here's a Google book page on Angel in Black: Memories of Dale Earnhardt Sr. They did get the name wrong. It should be Angel in Black: Remembering Dale Earnhardt Sr., as it's listed here on Amazon.

Here's the page for Then Junior Said to Jeff... on Amazon. Jim McLaurin and the late David Poole wrote the book, and I updated it with 19,000 new words in 2012.

And here's I Remember Dale Earnhardt on Alibris. That's the book that was rewritten into Angel in Black: Remembering Dale Earnhardt Sr.

A handshake with Earnhardt

EARNHARDT AND BOBBY LABONTE
This is another memory in honor of Dale Earnhardt Sr., who died on Feb. 18, 2001.

It was the late 1990s, and we were at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Earnhardt was being swamped by race fans, and he was looking around for help.

He saw me and smiled. He knew how to get away.

As I walked up, Earnhardt stuck out his hand and we shook hands. It must have lasted a half-minute, and we had a short conversation. I told him that he owed me one for the favor; he smiled and agreed.

The fans seemed to enjoy the incident because Earnhardt was talking to someone he knew (at least a little bit, in my case).

Then he turned and walked away, leaving me and his fans in the lurch. I saw him a few times after that, but we never spoke one-on-one again.

If you're wondering, that was only the second time we ever shook hands. The first time was on the media tour in 1992.
