SAVED BY WILLIAM BYRON |
THE YEAR WAS 2003, and we were at Richard Childress Racing on the annual NASCAR media tour. This was the last season that Winston would sponsor the Cup Series.
I was doing a story for some publication -- I forget which -- and RCR supposedly had the toughest group of Cup, Busch (now Xfinity) and Truck drivers that year. Kevin Harvick and Jeff Green were two of those drivers, and I can't remember the third. It might have been Mike Skinner; I don't know.
I asked each driver a question or two and wrote my story. But that's not the end of the story.
I recently realized that Harvick was the last Cup driver still racing that I ever interviewed personally. And he retired at the end of the 2023 season.
I don't think I ever talked to Ryan Newman, and I can't think of another current driver I talked to.
So I'm officially done.
Wait a minute! I just realized that I interviewed a teenaged William Byron in 2014 when I was writing about Hickory Motor Speedway.
Phew! I'm saved.
P.S.: I just remembered that I also interviewed Josh Berry when he was racing at HMS. Josh is moving up from Xfinity to Cup this year.
